This book is a basic statement of the Catholic Faith. It may assist in the formation of both older children and adults. It includes common Catholic Prayers, which might well be memorised, together with the Scripture references so that it can be studied with a Bible.
Since 1974, when it was first published as a pamphlet by the Australian Catholic Truth Society, The Catholic Faith has been reprinted sixteen times and revised twice. The last printing of the original edition (1987) was published by the Society of St Vincent de Paul, followed by a revised edition published by the Society of St Peter Canisius in 1996. A Chinese translation was recently published in the Archdiocese of Kuching, Malaysia.
The Catholic Faith has thus proved to be Australia’s most widely used compact summary of the faith. It has introduced inquirers to Catholicism and helped catechumens and converts to believe and live the eternal truths of Christ’s Church.
This latest edition is still based on the Australian Catechism (1937), revised in the light of the Second Vatican Council. However, following the Catechism of the Catholic Church (published in English in 1994). the sections have been re-arranged and much new material has been included. An appendix has been added so that this basic statement, which is not an official catechism, may now serve as a key to the deeper and more detailed content of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
