Godfried Danneels, born June 4, 1933, has a degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of Louvain and a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University of Rome.
He was ordained a priest on August 17, 1957 for the diocese of Bruges. He was Named Bishop of Antwerp on November 4, 1977, he is consecrated on December 18.
Two years later, on December 19, 1979, he became archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels and primate of Belgium.
On 18 January 2010, having passed the age limit, his resignation was accepted by Benedict XVI. He was created cardinal at the consistory of 2 February 1983 with the title of Cardinal-Priest of St. Anastasia (S. Anastasia). He participated in the conclave of 2005 and that of 2013 which elect Popes Benedict XVI and Francis respectively.
