George was a Christian in the Roman army during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, one of the most violent persecutors of Christians in history. Having ascended in the ranks, George used his position to speak openly against Diocletian. As punishment, George was tortured, beaten and killed around the year 300. He is the patron saint of soldiers.
