One of the four Gospel writers, Matthew was also one of the original twelve apostles. He was a tax collector, a job that made many question his integrity. When Jesus invited him to join His followers, the Scribes and Pharisees expressed their outrage at the choice. Christ answered them, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17)
