James was working by the seashore when Jesus called him to be an apostle. He followed Jesus faithfully, all the way to martyrdom. James’ remains rest in the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela, one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in the world. Along the roads to James’ tomb, scallop shells are badges of honor for those who have made the harrowing journey to visit the site. James is the patron saint of Spain and was beloved by the horse-riding conquistadors who often sought his intercession.
